NBC must practise good governance

Letters, Normal

THE National Broadcasting Corporation is a service organisation.
The little money that the government provided in the past two years was meant for equipment and other infrastructure rehabilitation to improve service delivery to the grassroots in the form of news and information.
While the silent, loyal and dedicated staff were encouraged by a K21 million funding from the government, senior managers in NBC thought otherwise.
They saw this as their golden opportunity to do what they wanted.
They went on unnecessary field trips, hired expensive cars, slept in luxury hotels and did whatever they wanted to do.
Some trips were so secret that only a handful of staff knew it.
There is no transparency or accountability within NBC.
Nobody seems to care at all about good governance.
Worse still, illicit activities were hatched and bogus contracts worth millions of kina were awarded instead of settling the outstanding bills as reported in The National.
I think the underlying factor here is there are no trained and formally qualified managers in NBC.
With due respect to a handful of managers, the rest who were promoted had no formal qualifications.
Wantokism will drive NBC to ruins and every effort must be made now to hire and promote staff on merit.
We have more than enough well qualified reporters, engineers and accountants who can be called upon to take up the management positions.
