EASTER is here again when hundreds of Catholic parishioners in Port Moresby will take the long walk for the archdiocesan Way of the Cross.
Archdiocesan Catholic youth council animator Sr Agnes Eugene said youths would lead the procession carrying a cross.
“We have 500-plus marshals for the day who are from the parishes in the archdiocese,” she said.
“There are 1000-plus youths taking part in the Way of the Cross.”
Sr Agnes said they had enlisted the help of 20 and 30 young people from the parishes to serve as marshals.
“There is not a lot of space at St Mary’s Cathedral so not all youths or parishioners will be able to join the vigil today,” she said.
“But they will join us on Friday through the stations of the cross.”
The procession will start at 4am at the St Mary’s Cathedral, to the Hubert Murray Stadium, then along freeway to SP Brewery and to Digicel headquarters.
The route goes past the Japanese Embassy, Parliament up the Somare Boulevard towards the Waigani traffic lights, then past Ensisi, Rainbow and ending at the St Charles Lwanga parish.
“All parishioners will be joining, including police and army chaplains,” she said.
“Some will help the marshals in the back of the procession.”
Police are expected to provide 40-plus traffic officers to for security.
