OFF-season rugby league teams will battle for the NCD Governor Powes Parkop Cup next week.
Tournament organiser Billy Aki said yesterday that Governor Parkop had supported the event for the past three years.
He said pool A matches would be played at the Kone Tigers oval and pool B at the Hohola field.
Aki said 12 women’s teams – six each from Hohola and Boroko – would also take part in the tournament.
He said teams from Central province were invited to take part and the affiliation fee was K300 with the deadline for payment being Dec 24.
“Only 24 teams will be accepted on a first-come first-serve basis,” he said.
Aki added that current PNG Kumuls players were not allowed to take part in the tournament: “because this is an opportunity for suburban, settlement and village based players to participate at their own level and standard”.
However, he said only two Digicel Cup players per team would be allowed to play.
Aki said the tournament aimed to promote the spirit of Christmas among sportsmen and women in the nation’s capital.
“It’s not about winning the money but to enjoy festive event through sports,” he said.
and not to be involved in illegal activities like illicit drugs, home brew and marijuana,” he said.
Reigning champions Morata Swans are favorites to retain the title for the third successive year with stiff opposition coming from Hohola Flies, 9 Mile K Faris, Boroko and Kaugere.
