NATIONAL Capital District (NCD) remain unbeaten in the Southern Conference of the Women’s National Soccer League after they beat Port Moresby Strikers 3-0 in round three on Saturday.
In the other two matches of the triple-header played at Papua New Guinea Football Stadium, Hekari United also maintained their unbeaten run with 5-2 win over Amoana while Souths Hinamo registered their first win, beating Bernice 5-1.
NCD captain Cynthia Bangita scored a double while Sonia Toho scored the other goal in their side’s win.
Strikers backs Sheila Niebo, Kelestah Mwawesi and Maria Bagi were put under pressure throughout the match due to amount of possession in NCD’s favour.
Bangita, Toho and Gloria Laeli benefited from NCD’s dominance with ample goal-scoring opportunities.
Although Strikers were not much of a threat to NCD’s defence, they had a few opportunities to score consolation goals in the final 20 minutes.
However, forwards Ceila Haro and Nialen Moses could not apply the finishes.
Despite the win, NCD coach Wira Wama told The National after the game that his side needed more improvement.
“I am disappointed with our attack, I believe we could have scored more goals, but we just couldn’t coordinate well in the forwards,” he said.
“That is something we need to work on if we are serious about finishing this season on a high note.
“I thought we had more possession, but we were not serious about scoring.
“But generally, everyone played well.
“A win is a win.”
Wama warned his side not to be complacent in their next game.
He said the team would take it one game at the time for the reminder of the season.
