THE National Capital District Commission has invested K248,000 on various courses for prisoners at Bomana Jail outside Port Moresby.
Deputy city manager Lulu Ted told The National that the money was invested into Asia-Pacific Institute of Applied Social Economic and Technical Studies (Apiasets) for prisoners to study tourism and hospitality, carpentry, electrical engineering, primary teaching and other subjects.
The programmes come under the Technical Vocational Education and Training programme.
Other partners are Ginigoada Foundation, Department of Justice and Attorney General, and Department of Youth Religion and Community Development.
“To give an opportunity to the prisoners, give them skills,” Ted said. Apiasets executive director Thomas Pillar said they wanted more inmates and jail officers to be part of the programmes.
