NCDC, police discussing CCTV activation in city

THE National Capital District Commission is discussing with police to activate 190 CCTV (closed circuit television) cameras in the city, says city manager Bernard Kipit.
Kipit made the statement during the Nation Capital District Law and Order Summit in Port Moresby yesterday.
He said NCD had a three-tier approach to addressing law and order issues in the nation’s capital that included formal law and justice sector, urban management programmes and community intervention programmes.
“While police are tasked on the first tier, NCDC is concentrating on the last two tiers through our routine urban and community engagement programmes.
“We believe the ‘settlement to suburb programme’ will be a game changer and we may see a different result by default when this is achieved,” Kipit said.
“Because the bulk of the city’s population lives in settlements (over 50 per cent) there is a huge lifestyle difference in access to municipal services in the demography.”
He said they would soon be launching their pilot project under the ‘settlement to suburban programme’ at the 8-Mile and 9-Mile settlements in Port Moresby with 1,500 lots.
He also said that National Capital District Commission was offering other programmes like Ginigoada Business Foundation, UYEP – Lifestyle and on-the-job training, informal skills training, TVET and scholarships, Active City Development Programme, volunteer cleanup programmes, Reform criminals through parole and probation, diversion through sports – create sporting facilities to contribute to indirectly reducing the crime in the city.
