IT is unlawful to operate liquor shops in residential areas in Port Moresby, says National Capital District Commission city manager Bernard Kipit.
Kipit said concerns raised by police and the public that a number of liquor shops were operating late into the night with loud music.
According to NCD Metropolitan Superintendent Perou N’dranou, noise pollution from those liquor shops and harassment of girls and women by drunks have become a disease in the city.
Kipit said they were aware of the concerns of the people about liquor shops that operated beyond normal operating hours and the loud noises they made.
“It is advisable for people, especially the public living in areas where those liquor shops operate, to report them to our office so we can check them out,” Kipit said.
He said many of those liquor shops were operating illegally without the approval of the NCDC Liquor Licensing Board and without a legal licence.
“According to our liquor licences, when we want to issue licences, there are protocols our clients follow to fulfil the requirements before we issue the licences,” he said.
“If they do not meet the licence requirements, we do not give them the licence.
“If you have reports like that, you can report to us and we will check it out. You know some shops are operating illegally.”
