NATIONAL Capital District Met Supt Perou N’dranou has refuted claims that policemen accused of killing Ronald Kolip in Port Moresby on June 6 were under the influence of alcohol.
Supt N’dranou also said reports suggesting that they had threatened witnesses of the incident were wrong.
“The incident is unfortunate and we are yet to establish the facts of the case, but those who are spreading false rumours could be arrested for diverting the course of justice,” he told The National.
Supt N’dranou was responding to a number of witnesses who claimed the policemen were drunk and threatened several witnesses there.
Kolip was allegedly shot and killed by police when they were dispersing betel nut traders in front of a supermarket there.
“The policemen were not drunk and they have not threatened anyone,” Supt N’dranou said.
“I went to the (crime) scene and called on all witnesses to give their statements at Gerehu police station.” “The Gerehu police station commander will collect the statements and bring them to the criminal investigations division.”
Supt N’dranou said he was still waiting for statements to be brought to him.
“Until they (witnesses) help us, we cannot progress much in this investigation.
“We did everything we can.”
He said the post-mortem would be done when the court directed the coroner to do so.
He explained that until a medical report determining the cause of death, no one could be charged.
“We have to wait until a confirmed medical reporting clearly stating the cause of death.”
He said murder investigations could not be rushed and correct procedures should be followed.

  • when a simple man kills a policeman, he is arrested straight away and put into jail, with out police doing any investigations or post mortem, and court the next day and up to Bomana….why cant be the same, instead of them roaming around and making fun the public.

  • Dispersing betel nut traders with guns is like chasing wild animals in the jungle and so please suspend Supt N’dranou for supporting his shooter. Human beings are not animals you can chase with guns.

  • This betel nut law goes against the free will of people. The trade is very lucrative so can the Government accept this reality and wake up. Let this striving business continue. The law should be changed to target the chewers who litter the place….It is very funny suspicious and against the wishes of the people. In any democratic country majority rules…so the Govt should adapt and make provisions for this trade……the restriction of this trade is really expensive ….

  • Where they frustrated, why were the policeman use guns in almost all their activities? Are there other means to disperse a crowd to solve a crime? What about water.

  • Metropolitan Superintendent, So these is how you train your men in crowd dispersion techniques??? Aim a weapon loaded with live rounds at the crowd and shoot???
Did the threat level there warrant your policemen to use lethal force against the defenseless civilians???
You needed witness statements and yet when more than one witness claimed your policemen were drunk you still had the audacity to refute those witness statements and want witness statements from the Gerehu Police??? How do you know your policemen were not drunk? were you a witness?

Met Sup, step up your game! You have NO , ZERO command and control over your policemen hence the RPNGC will still be a ill reputed organization! Until you train your men what NOT to do, when they apprehend or confront a civilian, We will continue to see all these substandard ill reputed men in Blue!!!

    • I support you on this point. 99% of the people are unemployed. Betelnut selling is an avenue where people earn money to provide for their basic needs.
Whoever, is legislating against betelnut trade is acting against the will of the people and their livelihood. Better legislative alternatives should consider chewers and littering.
As mentioned, the legislation is sure to create conflicts and create events that may give rise to the opposite of good governance- anarchy.
The incident in question is case worth considering …

  • I call on this police officer to resign and some one who knows the job can do better.
Can the police commissioner and police minister look into the man N Dranou???
    He is starting a fire.
I wish you could be like Antony Wagambie.

  • Honestly, Papua New Guinea is doomed to failure. The simple explaination is, even the government holders doesn’t know the law…
Can he shut up and go to UPNG and take up law then go back to work. This is not democratic..

  • betel nut chain

    grower(farmer)+seller(vendor)+chewer

how can you stop buai ban?

simple just chase away the sellers. they dont know where to trade
the farmer will suffer because they have customer.
chewer will stop if there is no buai seller.

is it there any other cash crop to sell instead of buai??
this city is the centre of papua new guinea, there is betel nut stain everywhere around the city.
and yet you are promoting tourism in png.. common people think.

  • If you are sober, that’s means you can distinguish between right and wrong
How can you kill and innocent person when you know it is wrong. Too bias. Don’t try to ignite the fire. Think and speak as an intelligent being..

  • The Met Supt Perou N’dranou need to do the right decision. Stop all this corruption within the police force. If he is guilty of what he has done, then let him face the consequence.
Killing a human being is not a joke. If you said he was under the influence of I would rather be happy for you to present that in court which part/section of the PNG laws states that police on duty must or be under the influence of alcohol while on duty.

  • OUR IGNORANCE HAS CAUSE THIS DEATH… BLAME COPS/BLAME BUAI SELLERS/BLAME PUBLIC AS A WHOLE.
In order to arrest the police officer..
1- THE WITNESSES- have witnesses who saw what happened…. do you have this witnesses? if no, where are they, id them and bring them to the cid officer dealing with the case.
2- post Moterm – coroner will ask the Drs at POM gen to operate and Dr will reveal the post moterm report to the corona.
3-if a bullet hole was found In the body then witnesses should ID the cop who held the gun at that particular time and the commander will then confiscate the suspected weapon used and have it analysed by Ballistic in Aust .
4-Then the witnesses statements will have to ID the cops sorry, if none of this is proven, then The investigation will be slow and process will be slow so the cops will not arrest people who are implicated.
5-My advise to you all, FACTS ARE FACTS- WE MUST PROVE BEYOND REASONABLE DOUBT TO ARREST AND SENTENCE SOME ONE TO 25 YRS…IF WE DO NOT HAVE THIS FACTS/EVIDENCE AND EXHIBITS, THE COPS WILL WALK FREE … one way or the other evidence MUST have weight in order to effect arrest and Convict some one, if not,, SORRY WE ARE JUST WASTING OUR TIME TALKING AND CRITICISING POLICE in this,, who ever you are, if you have witnessed this shootout COME OUT and give your statements to the CID investigator dealing with this investigations.
