MOROBE police commander Supt Alex N’Drasal wants an investigation conducted into the death of a villager and the wounding of an off-duty officer during a police raid on a village.
He said the incident happened last Thursday at Karisou village in the Safia local level government of Northern.
He suggested that a police team from police headquarters investigate the incident.
N’Drasal said the off-duty officer was at the village when he saw a community-based policeman carrying a gun, and took it from him.
“After some hours, policemen from Northern came and started open firing in the village. “A villager was hit on the back and died instantly,” he said.
“The off-duty officer was hit on the shoulder and leg and medically evacuated to Lae,” he said.
“He spoke to me briefly when he was at the Lae International Hospital,” N’Drasal said.
“I will not comment further on this incident as the policeman is on his sick leave.”
Meanwhile, Northern police commander Supt Michael Welly said detectives from Port Moresby were in Northern carrying out an independent investigation into the incident.
