FORMER Pacific Games 200m champion Nelson Stone said he was pleased with the performances of his Nest athletics club members in last weekend’s part one of the PNG Air Grand Prix Series in Port Moresby.
The 37-year-old told The National yesterday that most of the athletes were students and rookies, but they performed well in the field and track events.
He said East Sepik’s Emmanuel Anis — who rivalled Stone’s speedster Leroy Kamau in last year’s regional and national championships — was a new inclusion to the club.
“I am not surprised with the performances of my athletes, especially Anis,” Stone said.
“He has been a strong rival to Kamau, but he decided to join (Nest) early this year.
“He hasn’t completed his full-block training due to health reasons, but he resumed (training) recently before competing.
“Despite that, he has done well and won the 100m and 200m events.
“In the women’s 100m, Salome Yaling and Elizabeth Lourie did well to finish first and second respectively.”
In the men’s long jump, Manau Rocka and Eldan Toti fared well among other athletes. Stone said his long-term goal for the club was to dominate the end-of-year national championships.
“We’ll be preparing for that (end-of-year national championships),” he said.
“But for now, I’m letting the athletes rest before we resume training next week.
“We’ll be having weekly competitions to prepare for part two of the series in Kimbe as well as the Southern championships and the nationals.”
