Netball Papua New Guinea has endorsed train-on squads for its open and junior divisions to undergo a high performance programme over the next two years.
Netball PNG chairman Julienne Leka-Maliaki said in a statement that the senior train-on squad included members of the current national team, 2017-2018 train-on group and players selected from the recent national championships held in Lae.
She said national selectors had also picked a junior train-on squad comprising U13, U15, U17 and U21 players plucked from the championships.
“We are embarking on a 10-year programme with a number of focus areas, including creating a pathway for aspiring players to reach their goals and creating new domestic competitions for players with the objective of eventually playing in an international semi-professional league in the next three years,” Leka-Maliaki said.
“We are also focussing on developing our technical teams (coaches, umpires and managers), with the aim of having a pool of qualified and internationally recognised officials.”
She said the senior squad would be busy training for next year’s Pacific Games in Samoa, the Nations Cup Series in Singapore and the Pacific Series in Port Moresby.
“For the juniors, we have a number of in-country training camps over the next 12 months and planned regional events in preparation for the 2021 World Youth Cup in Fiji,” Leka-Maliaki said.
