BANK South Pacific’s subsidiary company, BSP Finance Ltd, installed a fully-kitted solar-powered lighting system at Iobuna Kouba Primary School in Central on Friday.
The project cost K25,000. Supplied were solar panels, light bulbs, switches, distribution lines and a generator.
The school caters for about 800 students from elementary to grade 8.
BSP Finance country manager Brett Tayler asked the community to look after the facility. “We are committing ourselves to equipping local schools with the tools they need for better education. We believe that providing solar lights to schools will help improve literacy rates as well as an increase number of student intake into tertiary education,” he
said. “BSP Finance together with the BSP Group deliver community projects in all provinces through its branches and strategic business units, even in the Pacific Islands countries where we operate.”
The head teacher said they had a lot of power disruptions although they were located along the power grid. “With these new lights installed in our staff room we are confident it will enable our teachers to work after hours and use laptops and printers to prepare lessons. Solar light for the school will be cost effective and eco-friendly and more importantly we will have a reliable back power source for the school,” the teacher said.
