Netballers seeking donations for rural centres

MEMBERS of Pluvia, a netball club of the University Of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) Netball Association, are calling for donations to give to women and children patients of Motobe’s rural health centres.
The club, made up of mostly girls from urban areas of Lae city, were doing this in line with the UPNG Morobe Students Union five-year plan, Project Genesis.
Club captain Bianca Tuckayo, said: “Our efforts will directly benefit patients in rural hospitals, providing them with essential clothing, beddings, and improved healthcare experiences.
“Similarly, the opportunity to contribute to the educational development of students in rural schools through the donation of books fills me with excitement and hope for their future.” Tuckayo said the team applauded the Morobe Student Union’s president for the great initiative (Project Genesis).
“However, we saw that the project mostly donates medical equipment to refurbish health centres,” she said.
“Although it will benefit the health centre and patients collectively, we also want to give something to the patient.
Final year law student and club member Siava Isaac said from last years’ experience with the union, she realised that people in rural Morobe lacked basic services like education, healthcare, proper roads and law and order.
“They also lacked basic necessities for everyday life such as clothing, proper sanitary equipment for women and children and school supplies,” she added.
“I believe the donations collected would truly benefit the women, children and men in those targeted areas.”
Team member, Jean Singura said the union would be supplying medical kits and renovating health centres.
“We are collecting donations like beddings, clothes for men, women and children, reading books, soaps, toiletries and anything that patients in the hospitals would need,” she said.
This year’s Project Genesis targets Salamaua, Situm and Wantoat health centres.
