SACRED Heart Primary School pupils in Port Moresby’s Hohola are very excited about the extension and equipping of their library with books and computers.
Stephanie Andueme of 2C class said she liked to read books in the library.
“I also like the library because it is colourful with posters and paintings,” Andueme said.
With help from Hope World Wide (HWW) and the National Library Service, the school has the best setup in the National Capital District.
The school had worked closely with the national library to improve its facilities.
Last year, the school board committed K70,000 to extend and renovate the library.
Last week, the European Union donated new books for the outcome-based curriculum. The books included primary school maths, science and English books for students and teacher resource books.
Yesterday, Hope World Wide donated two sets of encyclopedia and the national library donated a box of books to the school.
The computers will later be installed with educational software including the Encarta encyclopedia and world book encyclopedia.
Some excited students told The National about their joy of having a good library with donated books and equipment.
They also gave some information about the types of books they like reading.
Ernest Sinyor of 8C said the HWW had given students the opportunity to acquire knowledge.
“We had three computers, but that was not enough. With the five new machines, we can now do research and write our essays,” Sinyor said, adding that his favourite book was Without Remorse by Tom Clancy.
Cain Eoe of 2B and Denitta Derra of 8C told The National that they loved to read the books in the library.
Derra does not have a favourite book even though she had read many books. She counts on encyclopedias for information when doing her research.
