ASSISTANT Commissioner of Police Francis Tokura claims that counterfeit certificates are being used by people wanting to enter the police academy.
He was speaking during the second day of the commissioners’ conference in Madang.
He said that the practice was worrying because it was noticed at Bomana and other institutions in the country.
He said the practice was being looked into and that closer scrutiny of applicants was being done with aptitude tests conducted.
He said the Bomana Police College would become the Centre of Excellence which would add university courses in its  programmes.
He said K8.7 million given last year was used to start upgrading work.
The budget K128 million for the next five years will cover their salary, uniforms and rations.
“In 2013 we had an enrollment of 9,000.
“Only 600 were short-listed and less than 300 were able to get into college,” he said.
Tokura said a research with other institutions such as Divine Word University and UPNG revealed the same practice.
