New deal on Porgera should be appreciated

Letters

THIS relates to Institute of National Affairs executive director and economist Paul Barker’s discussions on the closure of Porgera mine in the Business section of The National on April 9.
He said the mine equipment required rehabilitation before the mine resumed.
Barker asked: “Who is going to meet the cost of rehabilitating the mine’s equipment?”
Those who benefit from the mine should be patient and appreciate what the Government is doing.
The Government is pushing for a better deal with the miner (Barrick Niugini Ltd) so that the landowners and the country can benefit meaningfully.
People should understand that the mine remained closed because of negotiations for a better deal that would in turn benefit them in the long run.
We cannot blame the Government for this reasonable cause it is taking despite the understanding that it is risking the economy of this nation.
We experience suffering and pain in order for better things to come.
Patience is importance in such situations.
That’s why the Government, Barrick Niugini Ltd and the landowner companies should come to an understanding and agree on how to go about rehabilitating the mine’s equipment.
