New market to be a safe place for farmers to sell produce

THE people of Koiari and 14-Mile have a safe market to sell garden produce – thanks to the partnership between Kairuku-Hiri MP Peter Isoaimo, Moresby South MP Justin Tkatchenko and National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop.
The new Banana Market (Biku Gabuna) was opened yesterday at 14-Mile.
Vendor Daian Garia from Chimbu said she did not have to travel to the city now to sell her produce.
Justina Vincent from Sepik said the new market was an opportunity to sell fresh vegetables.
Bora Kaia from Koiari said as a local landowner, she was grateful that a market had been provided.
Helen Chris from Chimbu thanked the members of Parliament for the initiative.
The market will be open seven days a week.
Tkatchenko said the idea was to have a safe, sound, healthy and secure environment for sellers on the border of NCD and Central.
Residents of Port Moresby can also access fresh garden produce.
“It’s all about community participation and helping our local community,” Tkatchenko said.
“This is an (added) attraction to the Adventure Park where visitors can buy fresh vegetables.”
Isoaimo welcomed a market for the people of 14-Mile. He said the Kairuku-Hiri electorate covered more than 10,800 square kilometres.
“I urge everyone to look after the place.
“All those in roadside markets will be advised to move to this new market,” Isoaimo said.
Parkop said the capital city was surrounded by the Kairuku-Hiri electorate.
