MORE than 7,000 people from Koroka village in Tambul-Nebilyer, Western Highlands, will soon benefit from a new 4.5km road.
Local MP Win Bakri Daki presented a cheque of K1.2 million to connect the Gia-Koroka road on Thursday.
The funding includes the building of a new bridge over the Kagul River.
The road would be built by a contractor in partnership with the Department of Works.
Chairman of Service Waiye Association Steven Kolaiye said the road would be a breakthrough for the struggling population.
He said the road would assist the district in transporting its local produce – vegetables, potatoes and broccoli – to the markets.
“We are very thankful to our local MP Win Bakri Daki for personally coming to our village, handover the cheque and the excavator to start constructing the road,” Kolaiye said.
Daki said his policy was “time for change” and this was part of opening up and exposing his people’s potential in terms of farming and business activities to others.
“I see that the DSIP K10 million is a lot of money and if we are committed to deliver, then things will work out,” he said.
“So when I give people’s money back to them, the electorate seems to become small because K10 million is a lot of money,” Daki said.
He said he was focusing on road, bridges, health, education and law and order.
