IN its first taste of AFL, a team from ward three in the Lae Urban local level government, DCA Mobs, is making good progress in the Under-18 schoolboys competition played at Niall Reserve Oval at Eriku.
According to the team manager Jonah Kembu Bino, DCA Mobs is made up of students of 16-18 years of age and who took part in the Pikinini clinic programme facilitated by AFLPNG.
The nine-team competition has DCA Mobs, Bugandi Secondary School, Bumayong Secondary School, Tent City, Kamkumung, Salamanda, 2-Mile, 3-Mile and 4-Mile.
Bino, who is a former national AFL representative, said Mobs players lived around the DCA beach front and come from Amoa in Morobe LLG of Huon Gulf.
He said it was the first time for the boys to play Aussie rules but they had caught up well and were enjoying the experience.
“My boys are new to AFL but through me they are learning a lot and have progressed in their games with the team in the third spot of the U18 competition ladder after two rounds,” Bino said.
“We need support from the families of the players, the community and business houses in ward three to support the boys in any way they can to keep them away from illicit activities.”
