Papua New Guinea Red Cross Society secretary-general Uvenama Rova has appealed to the public to respect the work of humanitarian organisations in the country.
Rova said this after the break-and-enter into the Red Cross office at 3-Mile in Port Moresby at around 4am on Friday.
He said the burglars climbed over the fence, held up the guard at gun point, broke through the emergency exit door at the western end of the office and forced open the door to the finance manager’s office and took K1,000 and a desktop computer.
Rova said the burglars broke open the safe and petty cash boxes to get the money.
He said the burglars went after the cash and other valuables and left everything else untouched.
“PNG Red Cross is part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent movement that helps prevent and address the suffering of the most vulnerable people and communities in the country.
“This is not the first time people have broken into this office, but people should know that we are a humanitarian organisation and that we do not deal with money,” Rova said.
“I appeal to the public to stop such bad behaviour because in the event of a disaster in the country it might be their people or community the Red Cross could assist.”
