Nicta will perform on par with developments: Chair

THE National Information and Communication Technology Authority (Nicta) will perform on par with the developments taking place in the information and communications technology space, says chairman Noel Mobiha.
Mobiha said after the authority’s corporate plan was launched recently, work was underway to align the corporate plan with the authority’s Act.
With the arrival of new players in the PNG market, he said Nicta would monitor all the repelling effects in the market.
On Nicta’s approval for Telstra to go ahead with its acquisition of Digicel PNG Ltd and the transfer of licenses, Mobiha said: “The Nicta board decided to do a lot more due diligence on the arrangements and requested a lot of documentations.
“What does it mean going forward? There’s going to be a lot of improvements from Telstra in terms of its reputation and the way it has done business.
“This is the first big telecommunication company that this country has got.
“It’s listed on the stock exchange (Australian) so their movements here and any little thing that goes wrong will cause a rippling effect on their share prices.”
He said after the Nicta corporate plan was launched, work began on ensuring the alignment of the corporate plan to the legislation.
“We expect a lot of new technology platforms to come in with the arrival of Telstra which will cause all these rippling changes in the systems and that is something we will be seriously monitoring as a regulator.”
