NID churns out cards after fixing printers

TWO printers used for National Identity (NID) cards have been repaired and are now back in use, says acting Papua New Guinea Registrar-General Michael Kumung.
The printing cards were suspended when the machines broke down.
They are the only printers available in the country.
Kumung said they were now back printing the cards at the Papua New Guinea Civil and Identity Registry Office in Port Moresby.
He said cards for people who applied earlier would be printed first.
He said registrations were progressing well with agreements being signed between the NID Office and private and public sectors including the District Development Authority in some rural districts to roll out the NID registrations.
Kumung said the card registration was a priority project for the Government.
He urged citizens in the public and private sectors to get themselves registered.
He said the office was ready to assist any organisation or institution or groups to conduct registration.
Despite the government asking people to register and get their NID cards, most people in rural and urban areas still had not registered.
Many feared that the programme was related to the biblical 666 doomsday number.
