NID work continues despite office fire in Popondetta

THE burning of the National Identification Card office (NID) in Popondetta last Tuesday night will not stop the work of registrations in Northern, says registrar-general Noel Mobiha.
“This is a development challenge for us and we will not back down but continue with the registration of NID as there is more support coming from the locals,” Mobiha said.
“Minister for National Planning Richard Maru has given his support for the work to continue despite the setback.”
“NID has reached out to most of the local level governments, including the Highaturu Oil Palm area – one of the biggest with 3000 employees and 2000 family members who were undergoing registration when the incident happened.”
Mobiha said the fire would slow their progress but they were still determined to achieve their 2020 target of National Identification Card registration for all.
It has been claimed that seven armed men broke into the National Identification office at night during heavy rain and stole computers and other consumables before setting the office on fire.
Acting provincial administrator Trevor Magei said the culprits were known to the public and would soon be apprehended by police and dealt with accordingly.
Governor Gary Juffa has condemned the actions of the criminals and appealed to Popondetta police to apprehend them and bring them to justice.
