THE Electoral Commission has warned political parties and candidates that any campaigning before the issue of writs is illegal.
Acting Electoral Commissioner Simon Sinai sounded the warning as the by-election process for the Moresby North West seat left vacant by the death of the late Sir Mekere Morauta is expected to start soon. Sinai said election campaigns were only allowed after candidates had filed their nominations, which should come after the issue of writs.
There are already moves by some political groups to woo voters in the electorate through organised gatherings.
“What they are doing is wrong,” Sinai said.
“However, it again depends on the nature of their movements and campaign plans.
“Sharing food and other events are a norm most say are part of our culture although it may seem illegal.
“We could see the difference between the sharing of food and the use of (loud) speaker systems to talk in public.
“So it depends on how we (view them),” Sinai said.
It is understood that potential candidates for the Moresby North West by-election have already started moving around the electorate even though the writs are yet to be issued.
Meanwhile, it is also understood that Sir Mekere’s officials will nominate a candidate.
There is move by those close to him to put up a candidate to replace him.
