LEADERS Genesis will look to pick up from where they left off when the Southern Conference of the Women’s National Soccer League resumes in Port Moresby tomorrow.
After a four-week break over the festive season, all six teams in the conference will resume their campaigns at Papua New Guinea Football Stadium.
Like Northern Conference leaders Poro, coach Percy Mataio’s Genesis are yet to drop points this season in the country’s premier football competition for women.
And they will be eager to continue their perfect start when they face National Capital District (NCD) in the main match of the Port Moresby triple header (3pm kick-off).
Mataio, who has been working with his team during the break, told The National that they had improved their game management ahead of round four. “We have been working to improve our fitness as the competition is getting tougher heading into the business end of the season,” he said.
“This is when teams start to peak in form.
“They begin to play more as a team, so we need to manage our players who usually play the entire match.”
Meanwhile, the opening match will see Hekari United take on Port Moresby City Academy (11am).
Second-placed Hekari, who have so far recorded two wins and a draw, are two points adrift of Genesis.
Coach Eric Komeng will want a win to keep up with Genesis and hold off third-placed NCD, who are three points adrift of his charges.
The second match will see Central side Amoana facing Port Moresby City with the hope of getting off the mark with at least a draw (1pm).
Amoana are the only team in the conference who are yet to win a match this season, but three-straight losses have not dulled their optimism under coach Naime Kepi. Fixtures: Sat, Jan 16 — Hekari United v Port Moresby Academy, Amoana v Port Moresby City, Genesis v National Capital District, Poro v Sepik, Morobe Tulip v Rainy Lae, Markham Raings v Bara, Tusbab Laidamon v Pacific Gardens.
