THE National Capital District Commission says there will be no sporting tournaments in the city during the festive season.
Kila Dick, the commission’s sports division manager, told The National yesterday that the suspension of all sporting tournaments during Christmas followed instructions from the Office of the NCD Governor in light of the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
“The office has suspended all Christmas activities in the city, including sports,” he said.
“This is due to the fact that people do not respect the Covid-19 regulations like social distancing, so it’s hard for us to control sports gatherings around this time of the year.
“Even the annual carols by candlelight on Christmas Eve has been called off and we’re not expecting any other big activities in the city.
“At this point in time, we don’t want to create activities and gatherings that encourage large groups of people to come out like we usually do.
“Another thing is that many people don’t seem to care anymore about what is being said during awareness and they’d rather do the opposite.
“So the decision to suspend sports for the festive season is in the best interest of public safety, given the current situation we have with the pandemic.”
Governor Powes Parkop said last week that the usual festive season activities would be scaled down due to concerns over a surge in Covid-19 cases in the city.
He said activities for the festive season were now limited to the New Year’s Eve fireworks.
