No need to split EHP

Letters

I SUPPORT Eastern Highlands Governor Peter Numu and provincial administrator Samson Akunai for their boldness in disallowing separation of the province.
Historically, internal dissensions have a tendency to fan ethnic discords, which have been the root cause of most African countries’ fiascos.
Zooming down on the national context, it wasn’t a mistake when the province was mapped out and tagged the name Eastern Highlands. It symbolically characterises a humble people, which is a trait demonstrated in all our walks of life. Look at the two new provinces, Hela and Jiwaka.
They were carved out from Southern and Western Highlands respectively, however, their growth and development in all aspects is currently a cause of concern. Administratively, four Eastern Highlands’ districts – namely Okapa, Henganofi, Kainantu and Obura-Wonenara – have in-house matters that need proper scrutiny and rectification before approaching this subject.
Let’s not act on impulse because we are dealing with people’s lives.
Let’s also remind ourselves that the divide-and-rule approach is outright egocentric in nature.
