KIRIWINA-Goodenough MP Douglas Tomuriesa says he has five new houses built at the Kiriwina station for policemen and women.
Speaking from his island electorate yesterday, he said two officers were posted to the island but were still in Alotau and not at their assigned post (Kiriwina).
Traveling from Alotau to Kiriwina is roughly a day by boat with a fare of K150.
“We have five new houses, a station and a rural lockup,” he said.
“Two officers were posted here (Kiriwina) but they haven’t moved (permanently) here yet.”
Commenting on a fight between the Kulumata and Kuboma tribes, Tomuriesa said 22 people were killed and not 32 as reported by media.
The incident believed to have stemmed from a soccer match which led to the destruction of gardens.
An all-out tribal war with traditional spears and bush knives broke out between the two parties that led to 22 people killed.
Tomuriesa said called on police to investigate the incident and also the person who fired with a tear gas canister.
Internal Security Minister Peter Tsiamalili Jr said a police team from Port Moresby was deployed this week to the island to contain the situation.
He said police would take the lead to help broker peace.
