The Northern Karate Association championships at the Higaturu Council Chamber on Friday was described as a great success.
Teams from host Popondetta Urban, Kokoda, Higaturu, Oro Bay and Tufi took part in the event.
Northen deputy governor Evertius Boure opened the tournament on behalf of Governor Gary Juffa.
Association president and director Kevin Duna was assisted by Oro Kick Boxing’s Selby Begins to officiate the event. The team from Tufi travelled by canoe for two days to attend the tournament.
The event was for the teams to experience, expose and develop their talents.
The event started last Thursday with the 55kg, 60kg, 70kg, Under-10 in point and full contact challenges.
The U-10 were the highlight of the day with action by athletes as young as five-year-olds showing determination to win.  Urban and PNG prospects Steven Bonga, Basil Oriri, Roy Ipa Dau and new found Tammy Nana are bound to make an impact in the code for Northern in the PNG Games and National championship.
Among the female 16-year-old Lois Duna is becoming an outstanding athlete. She was learning the art under the watchful eyes of her father Kevin since she was seven.
