THE Northern police command has received 12 new vehicles courtesy of the kina-for-kina programme.
The joint funding programme was initiated to get provinces and districts to partner the Royal PNG Constabulary to buy vehicles for their commands and stations to enhance police work.
Northern Governor Gary Juffa when taking receipt of the vehicles from Deputy Comm of Police Operations Donald Yamasombi, said the provincial government’s support of policing would continue to address Northern’s law and order issues.
He said the provincial government had put up K1 million which was matched by Royal PNG Constabulary for a total of K2 million to buy the 12 vehicles.
“We will be purchasing other equipment for police in the province and these vehicles will be fitted with Z plates,” he said.
“We will be buying new uniforms, firearms and we will be looking at building a mobile squad barracks.”

Juffa said new provincial police commander Daniel Yangen had already initiated foot beat and highway patrols to improve policing in the province.
DCP Yamasombi said the vehicles would see more stringent measures in place to ensure the equipment bought by the provincial government was used appropriately by police personnel.
