Now Moresby can go nuts over ENB galip

Business

GALIP nuts from East New Britain are now on sale to Port Moresby residents at Stop And Shop in Waigani Central.
The indigenous galip nuts (canarium indicum) has become a commercial product through the efforts of the newly-formed Galip Nut Company.
The nuts are handpicked and hand processed in East New Britain. It has been described as “of high quality with a unique taste and with the potential to become a world commodity”.
It is regarded as tasty, highly nutritious, and contains proteins, vitamins, healthy oils and anti-oxidants.
The nut is popular among outsiders, including expatriates, and the prospects for its commercial development are considered to be excellent.
This product allows local communities to harvest and sell for an income to supplement their gardens and cocoa.
The commercial packages are available in three variants: Roasted (60 and 100g packs), peeled (60g and 100g packs) and natural (100g and 1kg packs).
City Pharmacy Ltd Group will be the exclusive distributor of galip nuts from East New Britain.
It will be made available in three stores initially – Stop And Shop Waigani Central, Stop And Shop Harbour City and Prouds Duty Free at Jackson International Airport.
The commercial development of galip nut was jointly done between National Agricultural Research Institute (Nari), University of the Sunshine Coast, University of Adelaide Centre for Global Food and Resources, and the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research.
