THE closure of several coffee plantations around the country has resulted in a decline in production, according to the National Research Institute (NRI).
A research paper by intern Joecy Kabiu highlighted how coffee cooperatives can be used to address the issues facing smallholder coffee growers. “Coffee is one of the most important agricultural commodities that contributes to the (PNG) economy,” Kabiu said.’
“It contributes to the livelihoods of almost three million people in the country. But since the closure of several plantations, coffee production has continued to decline.”
The paper states that coffee production is being driven by smallholder coffee growers who currently face challenges.
“Through cooperatives, smallholder coffee growers can be assured of higher production, better-quality coffee, and better returns,” Kabiu said.
“Coffee cooperatives in PNG also face challenges that hinder their growth, resulting in the demise of some of them.
“The Government at all levels should do more to encourage smallholder coffee growers establish effective and efficient cooperatives.” to (improve the industry).”
