NUGGETS are the men’s champions of pre-season Futsal competition staged in Wewak, East Sepik, over the weekend.

In the women’s competition, the girls from Moem showed class to hold Outsiders scoreless and walk away winners.

Wewak Central Futsal Association (WFA), one of Sepik Futsal Association’s (SFA) local associations, completed its finals last Saturday.

WCFA started its pre-season on March 16 with 22 teams that took part in four divisions – the Under-13, U17 and open men’s divisions and open women’s.

The games were played over five weekends.

The grand final on Saturday saw Airstrip taking on HTS in the U13 boys division and beating them 2-0, while Saints thrashed Orimates 6-3 in the U17 division.

In the women’s division, Moem proved too strong for Outsiders, beating them 2-0 and Nuggets beat Orimates in the open men’s division 2-1.

Trophies were given to all top four placed teams and the best goalkeepers, defenders, mid-fielders and forwards were given free printed T-shirts to help promote SFA.

The SFA has selected players during the pre-season and is now preparing its U20 boys and girls and U17 boys for the Wewak District Games planned for June 6-10.
