GURIAS outside centre Francis Paniu, pictured, scored two tries in the opening round of the 2013 Digicel Cup, one in the second game against the Vipers and a double last weekend against the Tigers.

Whether he will continue his try scoring this weekend against the Lahanis is what everyone wants to know.

Gurias utility back Francis Paniu sees no obstacles to that as long as the backs have  plenty of ball.

Paniu, who turns 24 on September 9, is a 184cm, 84kg centre or five-eighth of West New Britain and Manus parentage and a resident of Vunapope, in Kokopo.

Paniu played for the Simbu Warriors in 2011 before linking up with the said the Gurias which he credits for adding purpose and direction to his life.

“If there is someone who has had the greatest impact in my rugby league career it will my coaches – Michael Marum and Oscar Tonga,” he said.

Like all rugby league players in the country, Paniu aims to one day be a Kumul.

“I am conscious that I am not the only one vying to make the Kumuls and now that the stakes are high considering the Kumuls preparations for the World Cup, I believe my patience will be rewarded,” he said.

Paniu initially made the Gurias squad in 2009 but was lured to Kundiawa where he played mostly at No.6.

He returned to the Gurias last year and has since become an integral part of the team.

He has represented the New Guinea Islands Under-19 team in the zone trials in 2007 and 2010.

His advice to young players is simple – discipline is the key to a successful career.
