GATEWAY Sharks knocked out Community Hall Tigers with a 3-2 victory in the Motor Vehicles Insurance Limited Morata Offseason Rugby League at the Kone Tigers Oval in Port Moresby on Sunday.
The teams still in the title race are Talapia Magpies, Mumuts, Sharks, Northern Warriors, Eastern Eels and Mautana Roosters.
Sharks will face Roosters in the elimination finals which may feature two Under-20 encounters that were deferred due to the Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League extra-time rule.
League executives will make a decision on that this week. It may force the grand finals back by a week.
Sharks’ Pomie Nyama opened the scoring with a penalty conversion before he slotted home the winning field goal.
Tigers bagged a penalty conversion through Ruddy Gideon to level 2-2 after the break. Towards the end of the game, a dispute arose from a knock-on and the referee stopped the game to explain his decision.
But the full-time hooter sounded which angered the Tigers who were upset over the stoppage.
This provoked the Tigers to protest the referee’s conduct. But league executives, who were disappointed with the protest, said the result would not be overturned.
