NEW Zealand Prime Minister Chris Hipkins says their government is committed to helping Papua New Guinea develop in its trade and agricultural sector.
Hipkins said this during a visit to the K30 million Gordon Market, which New Zealand had helped in funding, in the National Capital District yesterday.
“It is fantastic to be with you and it is great to come and visit Gordon Market, because it does, in my view, represent so much about the relationship between our two countries,” he said.
“It has been a great source of pride for New Zealand to be able to support the development of this market and other markets throughout PNG.
“On my first visit to Papua New Guinea as New Zealand’s prime minister, I am very pleased to be here.
“I can share with you our ongoing commitment to make sure that opportunities like the one we can see here today where these opportunities arise, New Zealand will continue to be a good friend to the people of Papua New Guinea.
“Markets are places where we come together and Gordon Market is a very good example of a place where we can come together, trade and enjoy each other’s company.
“More importantly, for a market like this, it is also a place where we can be safe.
“Where we can ensure that the rights of women and girls were being enhanced and protected at a safe trading environment.
“It’s an honour that New Zealand has been able to be a part of this.”
