Obura-Wonenara district challenged

Letters

Obura-Wonenara district is part of Eastern Highlands but over the years it has remained a statistic.
There are several reasons why this has been so.
The district is three times bigger than Goroka district. This means if you get Goroka district and fit it into Obura-Wonenara, it will fit three times.
Coupled with that, 90 per cent of the district is mountainous and geographically inaccessible by road.
It is reachable by plane only.
The people’s mindsets and attitude is confined within the parameters of their environment.
An illustration of this is during the election exercise.
This is when people flock in numbers out of their villages and hamlets to visit camps of intending candidates.
This is not to pledge their support but be awarded with material things.
In other words, to trade votes for material goods like money and lamb flaps.
I reckon all Highlands provinces that are much worse have done away with this mentality because they are fed up with the ramifications, and are now looking at constructive ways choosing their leader.
The other thing is that the people are too ignorant and unnecessarily complacent.
For example, the district administration in Aiyura with the political head is not performing as expected.
Development in the district is moving at a snail’s pace. People have all the rights to complain and air their grievances but up to date, there is no one doing it.
All of this is happening right under people’s noses but we are waiting for a miracle to happen.
People of Obura-Wonenara, we need to wake up from our slumber and do a total overhaul of ourselves or our existence will be subdued into mediocrity.
The next election is four years away and we need to make preparations now.
The earlier the better.
