Office forecasts dry weather

MOST parts of the country are expected to experience dry weather starting from this month to August, National Weather Service acting director Jimmy Gomoga says.
Gomoga said this was following the start of the southern hemisphere winter while the dry season set over the country with southeast trades well established.
“From June to August, dry conditions are expected over East and West Sepik, dry to neutral conditions are expected for Mamose, parts of the Highlands and Southern, including the New Guinea Islands,” he said.
“And neutral to wet conditions are likely for the rest of the country.”
Provinces most at risk of drought were West Sepik, East Sepik, East New Britain, New Ireland, Milne Bay, Central, Madang and Enga.
Gomoga said most climate models favoured a return to neutral conditions – neither La Niña nor El Niño this month (June).
The Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) or the Atmospheric wave would become active after two weeks.
Gomoga said drier conditions would be experienced over most parts of the country with extending drought conditions nationwide.
“Long term forecasts show wet signal for June onwards across the country,” he said.
