THE United Nation Development Programme (UNDP), in partnership with the Climate Change and Development Authority (CCDA) and the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG), recently conducted a week-long training on a National Adaptation Plan.
The training was for the New Guinea Islands (NGI) and was held in Kokopo, East New Britain
Jacob Ekinye, who is the project director and general manager of adaptation and projects division under the Building Resilience to Climate Change (BRCC) in PNG, told The National last Friday what they were doing now was part of the National Adaptation Plan they were trying to develop in the country.
Ekinye said in 2019, they had secured about US$1.7 million (about K5.98 million) from the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and partnered with UNDP. Ekinye explained that the National Adaptation Plan project would be funded by the GCF and implemented by UNDP in partnership with the CCDA, and the trainings were facilitated by the Centre for Climate Change and Sustainable Development division, under UPNG.
He said there were aspects of adaptation – mitigation and adaptation.
Ekinye said the point was about climate resilience and how the BRCC could able to help.
“In this training, we are targeting four main sectors – agriculture, health, works and transport – as these are the main sectors that have been affected,” he said.
“In the regional trainings we are inviting the representatives of these four main sectors to take part and give their input so we can develop the adaptation plan for the country.”
