A POLICE officer accused of killing a man in Wewak has allegedly escaped from the province, according to East Sepik commander Superintendent Robert Gesa.
He said the officer and his family packed up on the day he was called to report to the police station for questioning and flew out of the province the next day.
His four alleged accomplices charged with murder are in police custody after court appearance on Thursday.
“These officers were accused of killing a man at Wariman on Aug 25, 2017.” Gesa said those who appeared in the Wewak District Court for mention were: Constable Marcus Nimiehau, 26, from Yangoru, East Sepik; Constable Graham Haugua, 27, from Southern Highlands; Constable Dekis Tui, 28, from Hela and Constable Tony Kirua, 23, from Chimbu. The court has adjourned their case to Oct 12.
Of the alleged escaped officer, Gesa said: “He and his family quickly packed up at their house at Yawasoro Barracks and escaped out of the province on Friday.”
He said the officer had gone on assignment to the Frieda Mine after the incident.
“After he returned, we advised him to come to the police station for questioning.
“Instead, he packed up with his family and escaped on a flight out of Wewak on Friday. I am not happy with his action. But we will hunt him down and arrest him – anywhere in the country,”
Meanwhile, Gesa said a post-mortem was done on the deceased as part of investigations.
“Unfortunately, they cannot retrieve the bullet in his body. He was allegedly shot in the hip and the bullet must have hit an internal bone and ricocheted into the stomach and embedded there. And the body has already been buried. But we have the firearm suspected to be used in the killing and the discarded bullet shell. There are witnesses who witnessed the shooting. The discarded shell and the firearm have been sent to the police forensic laboratory in Port Moresby for further investigations”.
