TWO policemen and a civilian were charged with extortion by the internal investigation police unit in Port Moresby yesterday.
The policemen were also charged with abuse of office.
Director of police internal affairs Chief Supt Robert Ali said the policemen and the civilian were allegedly caught trying to get some money from Tars Sauka, the chief executive officer of Kikori MP Soroi Eoe, by way of using their police powers.

The Weapons and the money that the police officers from Internal affairs took from the two police officers and the civilian yesterday when they arrested them.

He said the accused demanded that Sauka give them K60,000 or they would have him arrested because his court files were ready.
Chief Supt Ali said on Christmas Eve the three accused went to Laguna Hotel and surprisingly met Sauka and told him that he was under arrest and should follow them to the Boroko police station.
“Instead of going to Boroko, they drove to Hohola where the police officer went to his house, took out a yellow envelop and gave it to Sauka, telling him that it was his court file.
Sauka told the police officers that he wanted to celebrate the New Year with his family so they could deal with him after New Year and asked them to drive him back to Laguna and he would give them K900 so they agreed and dropped him off.”
Then on Jan 1, the CID officer was given K3,000 by Sauka who told him that it was all the money he had with him and he could share it with his bosses and the boys.
Chief Supt Ali said the internal affairs unit were told about what was going on so they went to Boroko and reported that to CID police but the CID said it was best for the IIU (internal investigation unit) to investigate it.
He said he then organised police officers from his directorate and they had a meeting and proceeded to arrest the accused men yesterday while they were at Laguna with the victim when he handed them K19,600 in cash in an envelope.
When they arrested the suspects, they found in their possession two K1A1 rifles, two pistols and live ammunitions.
Chief Supt Ali said they would be investigated and other charges would be laid against them.
Chief Supt Ali said the vehicle they were driving did not have a plate number that corresponded to the registration of the vehicle.

  • These people are scum that tarnish the reputation and image of the Police force. I would recommend that the Police Department introduce more stringent screening procedures when hiring police officer cadets to ensure only proper and fit applicants are accepted and inducted into the force. Another area that I would assume needs an improvement is the type of training and moulding given/imparted at the Police training college. More emphasis should be placed in training and tutoring on morality.

  • Very scary to the Public and businesses when such rogue individual police officers are out with arms with the intention to steal. This may be a syndicate of happening within rogue cops and civilians. In this case the civilian must have leaked information that hard cash was distributed during the Kikori DDA Meeting in Laguna Hotel before Christmas and New Year Festive season. Thank you Police Internal Affairs Division for carrying out the operation to apprehend the suspects.

  • It is better to train those who just dropped out from grade 12 or 10 for a minimum of 2 years at Bomana. Not just train them for 6 months or one year and then allow them to wear blue uniform. Lawlessness increasing in the country and 40% to 50% contributed by some of police officers supporting their wantoks or tribesmen especially donating bullets and guns or even allow them to escape from prison or jail.

  • PNG is the only country in the world where you can become a police man after a 6 months crash course. So don’t be surprised if criminal elements pass the test and later become wolves in sheep skins.
It would be good to send them to Bomana with hard labour. Let them graduate from. Bomana jail after 10 years.

  • There is still no real consequence for actions, the police need to suspend officers found doing things wrong Without Pay, and come down hard to stop others following the actions of the bad ones as they think they can get away with breaking the law.
