Former Kundiawa-Gembogl MP Tobias Kulang is in detention at the Boroko Police Station after he was arrested by National Fraud and Anti-Corruption (NFAC) officers yesterday.
NFAC director Chief Superintendent Mathew Damaru said Kulang, a former tourism minister, was wanted by Chimbu police over corruption allegations.
“He has been evading police in Chimbu and came to Port Moresby,” Damaru said.
“Chimbu police obtained a warrant of arrest from the courts and notified us.
“So my officers arrested Kulang at the Waigani National Court in the morning (yesterday) and locked him up at the cell.
“He will be escorted back to Chimbu to be arrested and charged by Kundiawa police.”
Although Damaru was unable to elaborate, a Chimbu police officer said Kulang was wanted on corruption allegations during last year’s general election.
“He is wanted for allegedly instigating violence that resulted in a murder in Kundiawa during the counting period,” the officer said.
The officer said Kulang was initially arrested, charged and had appeared at the Goroka District Court last August. “He was out on bail and went to Port Moresby,” the officer said.
“He was wanted for further questioning but police were unable to arrest him.
“So they obtained a warrant of arrest in Kundiawa and sent it to the NFAC officers at Konedobu.
“Officers then went to the Waigani Court House and arrested him there.”
