PAPUA New Guineans have been encouraged to make use of their land for agriculture activities to earn money and sustain themselves.
Senior systemic adviser with the Fresh Produce Development Agency (FPDA) Conrad Anton said that about K100 million was circulated in the fresh food industry in Lae (Morobe) alone.
Anton said farmers who took their produce to Lae markets made a lot of money because the demand for fresh produce was high.
“Fresh produce and the food industry is a big industry,” he said.
“People eat every day.”
Anton was speaking to students at Markham Valley Secondary school during the recent World Consumer Rights Day.
He said not everyone who went to school would secure employment after completing their education.
“Therefore, I want to encourage everyone to use their land to plant sago, cassava, banana, sweet potatoes and other vegetables such as aibika and other garden produce because all those things will make money,” he said.
“Unemployment in our cities is very challenging and a lot of people are depending on fresh produce.
