THE Papua New Guinea Football Association has suspended all sanctioned competitions, including the Kumul Petroleum National Soccer League (NSL), and activities for 30 days over the coronavirus pandemic.
The decision was made after consultations between association president John Kapi Natto, his executive committee members and the NSL board.
“It is a difficult decision for our organisation but it is important that we do this in the interest of the health of all our soccer players, officials and fans,” association general secretary Dimirit Mileng said.
“The well-being of our players, coaches, referees, volunteers, supporters and the wider football community is our top priority.
“And, while this will be disappointing for many, postponing the NSL for the time being is in everyone’s best interests.
“Given the situation with COVID-19 is constantly changing, we continue to ask everyone involved in the NSL to follow appropriate guidelines.”
Mileng said issues pertaining to the competition would be brought before the NSL board for deliberation “if we encounter the worst-case scenario with the prolonging effect of the pandemic”.
Meanwhile, after 10 rounds, Vitiaz United lead the NSL on 25 points followed by defending champions Lae City (23), Hekari United (23), Tusbab Stallions (17) and Gulf Komara (13).
Bougainville (11), Morobe Wawens (9), Star Mountain (8), Morobe United (7) and newcomers Kutubu (6) make up the bottom half of the 10-team competition.
