PAPUA New Guinea Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) acting chief executive Stanley Hondina wants his people in the Mendi-Munihu of Southern Highlands to embrace the pilot potato project and go into farming.
Hondina received more than K10,000 worth of potato seedling, bags of fertilisers, knapsacks, wheelbarrows and other agricultural tools under Governor William Powi’s potato project rollout in the province.
The seedlings and equipment were given to farmers from Was one and two wards in the Karinz local level government.
Present for the presentation were acting administrator Joseph Cajetan, his deputy Fiebik Kilip, Department of Agriculture and Livestock (DAL) adviser Kenneth Kuim and other officers.
Hondina, who is from Was, said he was now looking forward to supporting his people because the project was sustainable and would give the people an opportunity to make a living off their land.
He said the project was about economic empowerment for farmers and having easy access to an established market would only improve the local economy.
Hondina said farmers in the two wards would form a cooperative society to grow and sell potatoes.
Kuim said the department was assisting farmers financially and providing seedlings and equipment to farmers.
