OFFSEASON rugby league competitions in Port Moresby will resume this weekend after they went into recess on Dec 16 for the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
Three offseason competitions — Kaupa Cup, Bomana and Hohola — resume games tomorrow.
The two-week breaks saw the NCD Governor’s Cup and Coca-Cola Ipatas Cup Central leg take centre stage.
The Governor’s Cup, played at the Kone Tigers Oval, saw the ID 24 Agros claim the top prize with organisers pledging to improve the next Christmas tournament.
With recent wet weather affecting fields that the offseason competitions are run on, organisers are prepared to hold off games until the surfaces are deemed safe to play on — Hohola offseason is played on Ipi Park, Bomana offseason is played at the Bomana Police College field and the Kaupa Cup played at Unagi Oval.
Hohola competition president Roger Laka said the games were expected to start this weekend but if the wet weather persisted they would call off games.
Laka said games were scheduled to kick off tomorrow but the condition of the field and the weather would be factors that could decide if the games went ahead or not.
“If we don’t play this weekend, then those games will be shifted to next week and will be played during the week,” Laka said.
The Hohola offseason is into its eighth round.
“Many of our players and clubs took part in the Governor’s Cup and other Christmas activities so we called off the competition.
“We have four more rounds before the finals, with round eight this weekend.
“Wet season is the only thing that will affect our games but we will play during the week if it is too wet this weekend,” Laka said.
