Offseason league cancels season, sharing K10,000 among top-five teams

The Gerehu offseason rugby league has cancelled its season and decided to pay a total of K10,000 to the top-five teams in the A and B grades for the 2019-2020 season.
League president Frank Korum said the decision followed concerns over the competition venue and the safety of fans and players. The semifinals were disrupted in March after the Government had declared a nationwide state of emergency over the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Because of Covid-19, we don’t have safety protocols to resume our season.
“Our venue is an open area so it’s too risky to have any competition or games here.
“Our competition hosts a good number of students and the lockdown has forced most of them to be way behind in their studies.
“So we think that resuming the season will distract them.
“So what we’ve decided to do is share the prize money for the grand finals between the five clubs (K1,000 each) in both grades.
“The competition is aimed at bringing youths together to engage in sports during the festive season.
“Now we’ll just be giving out the prize monies to the clubs and we’re probably going to wait until October to see if we can start the new season.
“Everyone has been affected by the pandemic so we think it’s best that we cancel the season and concentrate on the new one.”
Meanwhile, Korum thanked the National Capital District Commission for assisting with the league.
