PAPUA New Guinea international and Melbourne Storm centre Justin Olam says Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare’s passing is heartbreaking as “we hold him in high regard”.
The 27-year-old told The National on Sunday that Sir Michael had played a big part in laying the foundation of the nation.
“The Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare is a ‘father’ and leader to all of us Papua New Guineans,” the 2020 Telstra Premiership winner said.
“We hold him in high regard.
“His passing is a loss to all Papua New Guineans.
“It’s heartbreaking and I believe everyone feels the same.
“My condolences to his immediate family and close friends.
“May his soul rest in peace.”
The former Lae Tiger made the comments after he played in the Storm’s National Rugby League (NRL) trial match against the Newcastle Knights at Albury Wodonga on Saturday. Melbourne won 30-10.
Fellow Kumuls Moses Meninga and Wellington Albert took to social media to send their condolences while in Townsville, Australia, and the United Kingdom respectively.
Former Leeds Rhino Albert said: “Rest in peace, father of the nation Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare.
“Thank you for your services and sacrifices for our nation.
“May our Good Lord reward you accordingly.
“Your legacy will live on.”
Meanwhile, the SP Hunters sent their condolences through their Facebook page while in quarantine in Brisbane.
Sir Michael was a strong supporter of rugby league. During his term as prime minister, his government established the PNG NRL bid in 2009 with the hope of fielding a PNG team in the NRL.
