THE leaders of Apec have recognised new challenges regarding the tension between trading countries around the world, according to Prime Minister Peter O’Neill.
He said at the conclusion of the two-day Leaders’ Summit that this was amid the global challenges and economic conditions faced by the region.
“Apec leaders continue to focus on the efforts of trying to reduce inequalities focus on making sure that working together to remove trade barriers so that drive growth and ensuring prosperity for our people,” he said.
He said the 2018 theme was harnessing inclusive opportunities and embracing the digital future.
“This was an interesting subject among Apec leaders because this is about connecting people, businesses to markets but most importantly delivering quality services,” he said.
“That includes areas of education, health, financial inclusion and contribution to the reduction of cost, improving transparency so they can continue to support the growth that the Apec region and the economies continue to enjoy while at the same time driving the course globally.”
He said the leaders also recognised that there were some technology disruptions in the region and that was important to take note “so that we can continue to keep jobs and keep some of the businesses alive”.
“Jobs are important and technology and advancement of technology replace the jobs.
“There’s an increase in population where there’s increase in demand for jobs, it is important that we get the balance right.”
