OPPORTUNISTS taking advantage of the funeral service for Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare on Friday attacked staff and looted the Zenag Chicken Farm in Bulolo, Morobe.
General manager Stanley Leahy told The National that the full extent of the damage and losses would take few days to assess.
But the attack on breeder farms will affect day-old chick supplies to farmers throughout the country.
He said birds were trampled, products stolen and there were extensive damage to machines and equipment.
“While the majority of our operations was closed to mourn Sir Michael Somare’s passing, villagers from Zenag, Patep and Parakris seized the opportunity to loot farms and attack employees,” Leahy said.
“While the attack on law-abiding citizens is disgraceful, our pain is exasperated by the fact that the criminal onslaught was orchestrated while the majority of citizens peacefully mourn the passing of Sir Michael Somare.
“Perhaps most painful is the recognition that our facilities and staff were attacked by people we know in our community.
“Zenag farm recently donated desks, chairs and books to a range of schools in Bulolo.”
Leahy thanked police for restoring order. “We have extensive video surveillance of the attacks and will be working with police to bring the criminals involved to justice,” he said.
“Our primary objective is to get the damage repaired and production back on track.”
Meanwhile the Farmers and Settlers Association president Wilson Thompson said the public holiday should not have been used to loot properties and businesses.
“This behaviour is condemned as it will only increase prices and such incident should not happen to mar the respect given to our Grand Chief.”
